WaGing The good fight

By Karon Smedley

In our study this week from 1 Timothy 1, specifically 1 Tim 1:18, is from the New Testament of the Bible. I am reading the NLT version. 1 TIMOTHY It's a part of a letter written by the apostle Paul to his young protégé Timothy. Let us break down the verse to understand its meaning:

"Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord's battles."

In this verse, Paul is addressing Timothy, whom he refers to as "my son." This term of endearment reflects the close spiritual relationship between Paul and Timothy. Paul then proceeds to give Timothy specific instructions.

The phrase "based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier" suggests that Timothy had received some form of prophetic affirmation or encouragement in the past. These could be words spoken by prophets or leaders in the Christian community, affirming Timothy's calling, character, and role in the ministry. These prophetic words might have included predictions or guidance regarding Timothy's service in the church.

Paul's intention in his letter is to remind Timothy of these prophetic affirmations  and to use them as a foundation for the instructions he is about to give.  He wants Timothy to be aware that his actions and decisions are in alignment with what had been spoken about him in the past.  Paul likely sees these prophetic words as an affirmation of Timothy's role and a source of encouragement in his service for the Lord.

The phrase "May they help you fight well in the Lord's battles" carries a metaphorical meaning. Paul is likening Timothy's service in the ministry to a battle. This battle is not a physical one but a spiritual struggle against various challenges, temptations, and obstacles that the early Christian community was facing. Paul wants Timothy to remember the prophetic words and use them as a source of strength and motivation as he navigates the challenges of ministry.  We too can draw strength from these verses and wage the good fight over God’s promises to us.

In summary, 1 Timothy 1:18 is a verse where Paul encourages Timothy by reminding him of previous prophetic words that affirmed his calling and purpose. Paul wants Timothy to draw strength from these affirmations as he engages in the spiritual battles of ministry. The verse emphasizes the importance of staying true to one's calling and seeking guidance from God's promises and words.

Understanding: 18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme .
